The Role of a Logo in a Church’s Branding Strategy

To begin with let’s define what branding is. Branding is not a logo. A logo is an important part of the branding experience. Branding is the experience that your visitors and members walk away from your church with. There are many services out there that will sell you a logo. A branding strategy positions your church in the community and speaks volumes about what makes your church stand out and different. A logo plays an important role in this, but a logo without brand strategy is just a pretty image. A logo should be customized around the brand strategy. The colors should represent important values. A strong clean design shows your level of professionalism. Quality, depth, thought and meaning is of the utmost importance. Christianity is innovative and always relevant with the culture. Our branding should reflect this.

Stay away from pre-made logo designs.

The problem with buying or downloading a pre-made logo design is that the design is available on the entire internet to download. What if another church uses the same logo in your area? One of the purposes of branding is to stand out and differentiate yourself. How can you stand out when your logo is generic?

So what is the role of the Logo?

Your logo is like a small ad for your church, without the strategy behind it a logo can put across the wrong message and in return weaken your strategy. You want to keep your brand message consistent to help increase recognition.

  • The mission of your logo is to portray the values and goals of your church. Make sure that these are clearly established before you get your logo designed.
  • Be clear about the message you want your brand to convey so that your logo can clearly reflect that message. You must have a strong association between your brand and your logo. Remember it is only one piece of your branding strategy.
  • Your logo should reflect professionalism and growth no matter how small your church is.
  • You want a logo is not dated but can be used effectively year after year. Keep in mind it is how people will recognize your church.
